I would like to build a koi fish pond in my garden, any guidelines or special areas I should avoid ?

How deep should it be , if the surface area is abt 40 sq ft ? should it be 1ft above ground, 2 ft below? How do I take care of filtration, prevent algae growth, ph level, water temp., and maintainence schedule ? Help appreciated
